Modders have put an awful lot of effort into making sure Skyrim has continually evolved and expanded in the years since it was first released into the world.

Many have focused on changing the game by adding unique weapons, incredibly powerful spells, and interesting new quests. A few have even gone as far as creating NPCs that’ll dynamically move into Tamriel's abandoned houses or fixing bugs that’ve been plaguing people for years.

If you’re in search of something to do in Tamriel while you wait for Starfield or Skyblivion to arrive and aren’t afraid of heights, a new mod might be worth adding to your load order.

Fancy running across some rooftops next time you fire up Skyrim?

The mod in question is snazzily named ‘SkyClimb’, and is the work of modder Sokco816. Some of their previous projects have given players the ability to toggle the visibility of headgear, making all those hours spent in the character creator feel a bit less pointless, and start their own guilds.

This time, they’ve decided to add a “true climbing mechanic” to Skyrim, which “uses techniques seen in modern games to allow you to realistically climb onto anything.”

The mod accomplishes this by procedurally testing for climbable ledges that the Dragonborn can reasonably reach from their current position and clamber onto using the animations from Everglaid’s ‘EVG Animated Traversal’.

So, for example, if you were to approach the veranda hanging over the entrance of Warmaiden’s in Whiterun, you should see a blue indicator appear on the edge of it, marking a spot you can climb up to using the jump button.

As you can imagine given its ambitious nature, the mod is currently in a bit of a beta phase, with Sokco816 encouraging people to report any teething issues they run into while using it, so that fixes can be developed.

For instance, one player has already managed to getting stuck in a swimming animation under the map while trying to climb out of some shallow water.

If the prospect of that hasn't scared you off, you’ll need to grab the Skyrim Script Extender, ‘Powerofthree's Papyrus Extender’ and the aforementioned mod from Everglaid to get SkyClimb working as intended.

Regardless of whether your Dragonborn is now nursing some nasty injuries after plummeting through some worn tiles into someone’s kitchen, make sure to follow us for updates on Starfield, The Elder Scrolls 6 and the interesting world of Bethesda game modding.
